The Efficacy of Routine Activities Theory in Explaining College Campus Sexual Violence: A Population Based Test

Abstract

In recent years college campus sexual violence has garnered attention on the national policy agenda, sparking efforts to better measure, respond to, and prevent such violence on college campuses. While Routine Activities Theory remains popular among criminologists, relatively few studies have tested the theory’s efficacy in explaining college campus sexual violence. Moreover, the studies that have done so have been limited to sample data. This presentation will discuss the efficacy of Routine Activities Theory in explaining college campus sexual violence by using findings from the only population-based campus climate survey data-set to date.
