Abstract

The U.S. State Department Diplomacy Lab is an innovative collaborative research program that poses salient international development research proposals to a group of participating academic institutions. The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Office of Criminal Justice Assistance and Partnership (INL/CAP) has been a foundational participant of the program and has over four years completed 40 research projects with 11 institutions on topics ranging from identifying best practices to address wildlife trafficking to assessing the impact of women’s participation in criminal justice systems around the world. This thematic panel will describe Diplomacy Lab, highlight participating institutions and identify successful projects in five areas of international comparative research; police, rule of law, corrections, cross-cutting issues, and ports and borders. The panel will feature three research project presentations on successful Diplomacy Lab projects. INL/CAP aims to develop the space for innovative and cross-cutting international criminal justice research that informs U.S. foreign assistance programs. Diplomacy Lab is a key collaboration bringing together academia and the State Department to work together on innovative solutions to pressing foreign policy challenges.
