The Respite Care Alternative to Secure Detention for Youth Involved in Domestic Violence Incidents

Abstract

This study has two separate, but interrelated goals. First, data from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice are used to assess the veracity of the assumption that youth involved in domestic violence incidents who are sent to respite care facilities return to the juvenile justice system less than similarly situated youth who instead of being placed in respite care, are sent to secure detention. To the extent this assumption holds, the second aim of this study is to determine which youth were sent to secure detention rather than respite care and why.
