Use of Force, Crime Reduction, and Community Engagement: Methods and Results of Assessment and Evaluation in Police Departments

Abstract

The President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing emphasizes the need for police departments to improve their use of force practices, crime reduction efforts, and community engagement in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their service and improve police legitimacy in local communities. The presentation will discuss effective methodologies for assessing these factors and results from the assessment and evaluation of two police departments assisted through the COPS Office Collaborative Reform process.
