Cyberbullying, Cyber Victimization and Social Learning: A Comparative Study of College Students’ Cyber Deviant Behaviors in South Korea and the United States.

Abstract

With the advent of social media and information technology, cyberbullying and deviant behaviors in cyberspace have been increasing. Among college students, cyberbullying and cyber victimization became considerable issues. In order to understand the college students’ cyberbullying behavior and victimization, Akers’ Social Learning Theory (SLT) is utilized, and we examine and compare the unique influences of social learning on college students’ cyberbullying and victimization in South Korea and the United States. A multi-state cluster sampling techniques were utilized to collect 406 surveys from U.S. undergraduate students, and 711 surveys from Korean undergraduate students to assess students’ online activities including cyber victimization and perpetration. Data will be analyzed via LISREL using the Structural Equation Models (SEM) technique to estimate the effects of social learning on cyberbullying behaviors and victimization, and a comparative analysis will be conducted to provide specific social learning processes and cyberbullying behaviors in each country.
