Justifications for Violence: How Jihadist Sympathizers Rationalize Terrorism and Mass Murder

Wed, Nov 15, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Room 303, 3rd Floor

Abstract

This paper examines justifications for terror-related violence. Specifically, we analyzed the content of Tweets and linked articles in which jihadist sympathizers state their grievances and rationalizations for terroristic behaviors. We focus on four terrorist attacks: San Bernadino, Orlando, Charlie Hebdo, and the coordinated Paris attacks. Findings from this study will offer insight on how individuals construct their moral narratives to both condone and advocate the use of extreme violence. We conclude with implications and future research directions as they relate to counterterrorism.
