In 2017, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) plans to collect data on the prevalence of financial fraud victimization with the Supplemental Fraud Survey (SFS) to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The NCVS is a self-report survey that collects information on nonfatal crimes reported and not reported to police from a nationally representative sample of U.S. households. Currently, the NCVS has a variety of supplemental surveys that focus on new and emerging crime types; crimes that are different from the violent and property crimes collected on the core NCVS. BJS developed a screener and incident form that will be administered to NCVS respondents age 18 or older using the elements from the fraud classification scheme discussed in the first presentation. The supplement data will used to produce prevalence estimates of individual financial fraud in the United States. This presentation discusses an overview of the NCVS, how the screener and incident forms were developed, the types of estimates that BJS plans to produce, and the overall timeline for the SFS.
