A Preliminary Investigation into Factors that Impact Assignment to a State Pretrial GPS Monitoring System

Abstract

To date, there has been relatively little investigation into the assignment to pretrial GPS supervision. Despite this, its use as a pretrial supervision tool has proliferated, with little empirical analysis regarding its effectiveness. Prior to an examination of the effectiveness of GPS in reducing recidivism, an evaluation of which offenders are ultimately assigned to pretrial GPS is beneficial to gain a better understanding of the factors that impact assignment. This preliminary investigation will assess the relationships between demographics and criminal histories of offenders and their assignment to pretrial GPS monitoring. Practical implications and directions for future research will be discussed.
