An Exploratory, Latent Class Analysis of Students’ Needs, Perceptions of School Climate, and Behavior at School

Abstract

This study is part of a broader, ongoing evaluation of a school-based mental health program that targets youth at-risk for disciplinary action, school failure, and school-based arrest. Using baseline data from the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment and youth interviews, latent class analysis is used to identify unique subgroups of study participants in middle and high school. These groups are then compared on a range of demographic characteristics, self-reported behavioral health indicators, perceptions of school climate, and prior history of disciplinary incidents at school. Our results highlight the relationship between students’ needs, perceptions of the school environment, and behavior while at school. The implications of our findings for school-based policies and programs designed to improve school climate, disorder, and student outcomes will be discussed.
