Towards a Holistic Understanding of the Courses of Radicalization Among Returnees

Abstract

In this presentation, the initial results are presented from the EU-funded research project PERICLES (Policy Recommendation and Improved Communication Tools for Law Enforcement and Security Agencies Preventing Violent Radicalisation). PERICLES builds on previous counter-radicalization approaches through developments tailored to stakeholder needs. Tools include an advanced cyber-space detections system, an enhanced platform of exchange, vulnerability assessment tool, family care package, and an updated skills and competencies package. This presentation will summarize the outcome from an updated literature review on the courses of radicalization. This review is based on both former extremists and individuals in the process of being radicalized. Results show that religion is not a significant factor in motivating terrorism, the majority of individuals becoming radicalized in Europe possess a migrant background, and many individuals have criminal records prior to radicalization. Findings are consistent with former empirical studies. The results support the combined use of individualized prevention tools with a broader political agenda aimed at countering socio-economic factors.
