Intolerance as a Predictor of Rape Myth Acceptance

Abstract

This paper aims to determine what relationship, if any, exists between rape myth acceptance and intolerant beliefs as well as determine how this relationship varies across genders. I will analyze the relationships between rape myth acceptance and intolerant beliefs using the updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (IRMA), which assesses the degree to which an individual endorses a culture of sexual violence against women (Payne, Lonsway, & Fitzgerald, 1999) and belief systems encapsulating intolerance including racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and conservatism. This study includes a sample of undergraduates from a public southern university (n = 470) and employed an electronically administered survey. Multivariate models will be used controlling for all relevant variables including gun ownership, fraternity membership, region, and alcohol use. Findings will have implications for how intolerance operates across genders and potentially contributes to a culture endorsing sexual violence against women.
