Exploring Change and Prison Adaptation Among a Sample of French Inmates

Fri, Nov 17, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Room 415, 4th Floor

Abstract

Few studies have examined psychological, social and behavioral changes that occur over the course of a prison sentence. While the negative effects of incarceration have been widely documented, some research has suggested that periods of incarceration, if used effectively, can promote positive change. However, many of these studies were conducted several decades ago. Studying change and adaptation to prison life has direct relevance for desistance and reentry efforts. Drawing on a longitudinal follow-up of French prisoners, the current study investigates the process by which individuals learn to adapt to a long prison sentence, as well as the obstacles that may impede this adaptation process. This study also explores whether this adaptation produces change that is beneficial to preparation for release and reentry. Implications for desistance research and correctional practice are discussed.
