An Evaluation of an Alternate Measure of Attachment to Peers on Deviance

Abstract

In Causes of Delinquency, Hirschi found a negative correlation between attachment to peers and delinquency. However, this finding has often failed to be replicated, and some studies show a weak but positive association between attachment to peers and deviance. The quality of measures of attachment to peers varies widely, with some studies using questionable measures such as the amount of time spent with peers. This study addresses weaknesses in prior research on attachment to peers by utilizing Armsden and Greenberg’s (1987) 25-item inventory of peer attachment. Results show only modest associations between attachment to peers and deviance.
