The Necessity of Tolerance in the 21st Century: Perspectives on Police and Investigative Education

Abstract

Issues of community engagement have always plagued the efficacy of the criminal justice system, especially concerning law enforcement and investigative processes. These concerns have grown ever more salient by the recent and growing discord between the police and some of the communities they serve. This discord has led to a return to the “us vs. them” dialectic among a significant portion of the law enforcement community—in correlation with declining clearance rates among many crimes. Therefore, a reification of the importance of tolerance training in law enforcement is axiomatic. The current and former Oskar Schindler Humanities Professors, endowed by the University of New Haven, will present perspectives on this necessity with historical and current data, that will reinforce the absolute necessity of pluralism and tolerance in any law enforcement or investigative education in the 21st Century.
