Tuition Fees and Student Debt: Neoliberalism & Post-Secondary Education in Canada

Abstract

This poster will provide a review of the historical and international contexts of policies regulating tuition fees and student debt. In doing so, an examination of various tuition fee policies and the ideologies that support their use are presented, in addition to a comparison of the Quebec and Ontario operational models of the provision of post-secondary education. Through an analysis of the impact of the adoption of neo-liberal paradigms in regards to higher learning institutions, an illustration of the ways in which current post-secondary education regulatory schemes exacerbate social inequalities experienced by racialized and impoverished individuals will be presented, in addition to suggestions for solution interventions to address increasing concerns of high tuition fees and insurmountable student debt.
