Drawing upon racial threat theory, this research assesses how specific government actions that might increase or decrease the perceived political threat affects hate crimes that target relevant groups. The analysis combines a unique event database that captures specific government actions from 1989 through 2012 with hate crime data from the Uniform Crime Reports.
