Severe Drug Use Disorder Among Prison Inmates: Prevalence, the Risk for Misconduct, and Participation in Treatment

Abstract

Data provided by 11,886 inmates in the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities is used to examine prison misconduct among inmates who met the criteria for drug use disorder (DUD) based on the DSM-5. The relationship between DUD level and prison misconduct is discussed, as well as participation in treatment programs. The results of this study will be discussed along with two points of interest for future prison research (one methodological and one policy implication for the allocation of drug treatment in prison).
