• In Event: Perceptions about Human Trafficking: A Comparative Perspective

Abstract

Trafficking in persons is the illegal trade of human beings, especially women and children, for sexual exploitation, forced labor, or for the sale of organs that may be forcibly removed from the victims. Many vulnerable individuals become victims of human trafficking by means of abduction, threat, coercion, fraud and deception. Human trafficking violates the rights of individuals since it forces them into what is deemed a form of modern day slavery. Human trafficking is a global phenomenon that affects several nations, and these countries are used as source countries, transit points and destination countries. However, the movement of people through these territories are not visible. Instead, human trafficking is a very clandestine operation that is not easily detected. Nonetheless, many nations follow international laws that require countries to join the fight against trafficking in persons by being able to identify and investigate trafficking. Though such laws have been enacted to combat this phenomenon, the problem persists, and it has picked up momentum, making trafficking in persons a huge threat to several nations. Accordingly, this paper takes a theoretical approach and explores the issue(s) of human trafficking.
