Sat, Nov 18, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marriott, Room 302, 3rd Floor

Abstract

Since the People’s Republic of China had been founded in 1949, the government made the protective and advantageous policies to deal with the minorities. The Uygur and Hui Nationalities are two of the large groups that have the belief in Islam. They are the “Chinese Muslims”. The Uygur and Hui Muslims are protected all the time since the foundation of China. Yet, there was antagonism that have been reported since the 1990s and became severer in “July 2009 Urumqi Riots”. In a word, Islam in China has been supported, but at the same time, it is suppressed by the governments in terms of certain riots and antagonism. I focus on the Muslims’ trust in police because police are the performer in dealing with those riots under the control of government. Besides, police are part of Chinese government agencies. The data I am using is East Asia Social Survey. I use conflict theory and social capital theory to illustrate Muslims’ trust in police. I found that Muslims’ trust in police are indicated by their network situation and the degree to which they perception of government’s performance.
