Examining the Blue Line in the Rainbow: Reflections on Participatory Action Research

Thu, Nov 16, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Franklin 13, 4th Floor

Abstract

Law enforcement and the court systems cannot work to protect LGBTQ individuals if the interactions between these two communities are not positive, respectful and informed. Using the participatory action research approach in one Midwestern city, we set out to explore how these interactions could be improved. Through an examination of interviews with law enforcement officials and victim advocates, and field observations of town hall forums, this paper explores the challenges uncovered during the course of the study, specifically the issues that arose as a result of the uneasy blend of practitioners, activists, and researchers. We hope to offer suggestions for future efforts so that others can avoid these potential pitfalls.
