Restorative Justice in U.S. Schools: A Review of the Research

Abstract

The WestEd Justice & Prevention Research Center (JPRC) was funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to document the current breadth of evidence on restorative justice (RJ) in schools, provide a picture of how RJ practices are implemented in schools, and lay the groundwork for future research, implementation, and policy. The focus of this presentation will be on the final report in a series produced for this project, a review of the research. The review was conducted using research reports and other relevant literature published, or made publicly available, between 1999 and mid-2014. This report presents a brisk review of the research on RJ in schools, highlights key issues around implementation, describes models of RJ, and summarizes results from studies conducted in the field. The presentation will highlight the findings from this review as well as incorporate key information from the other reports published for this project including examples from interviews conducted with practitioners and experts to illustrate the findings from the research review.
