The Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Illegal Animal Fighting in a Large Texas City

Abstract

Illegal animal fighting is often studied through the lens of cultural acceptability and not criminal responsibility. However, dog fighting is a felony in all fifty states and Washington D.C., and cockfighting is illegal in all, and a felony in a majority of states. Illegal animal fighting rings are difficult to infiltrate and police response is initiated through anonymous tips. Animal fighting invites other illegal activities such as gambling, drugs, theft, and weapons offenses. In addition to the criminal activity, animal fighting has a monetary burden. Seized animals must be housed and often euthanized, straining local financial resources.
This study applies a geographic analysis of animal fights in a large Texas city. Nodes of activity and mobility of offenders are tracked over time and a descriptive analysis is provided.
