Individual, Institutional, and Community-Level Sources of School Violence: A Meta-Analysis

Fri, Nov 17, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marriott, Franklin 9, 4th Floor

Abstract

School violence is a pressing concern among policymakers and citizens alike. But creating effective, evidence-based policies to address violence in school would first require knowing what the sources of school violence are. Accordingly, in the present study we subject the body of empirical literature on school violence to a meta-analysis to determine the key individual-, school, and community-level factors that substantially influence violence in school. Multilevel modeling techniques are used to calculate mean effect size estimates and a series of moderator analyses are conducted to examine how robust empirical relationships are to methodological variations across studies. Theoretical, research, and policy implications of the analyses are discussed.
