The Distribution of Risk in IPV Cases: The Idaho Risk Assessment of Dangerousness

Abstract

The evolution of risk assessments in the past decade has moved far beyond correctional practices. Multiple instruments have been created to assess risk of dangerousness or lethality in intimate partner violence cases across multiple settings. One of the primary factors indicating increased risk across most tools is gun ownership. However, in jurisdictions with high proportions of gun ownership across the population, the potential for false positives may exist. This presentation will highlight the use of the Idaho Risk Assessment for Dangerousness (IRAD), a risk assessment for criminal justice professionals' use in IPV cases that was adapted for a high gun ownership location. Data and findings from the initial examination of its use by police officers will be discussed.
