Community-Based Research in a Rural Community

Abstract

According to some authors, the popularity of community based research is increasing dramatically. In the criminal justice system, participatory or community based research involving community stake-holders can result in significant changes in local criminal justice practices and policies. The present study examines the organization, advocacy, and implementation of community based research in a rural community. Beginning in 2012, faculty from Lock Haven University’s Criminal Justice Department began meeting with local stakeholders to diagnose, prescribe, and evaluate local criminal justice policies and practices through different community based research designs. Community-based research designs were used to examine offender re-entry, parole recidivism, and police satisfaction. Combining elements of data collection, analysis, and implications, we were able to collaborate with our community partners on strategic planning and justice reinvestment initiatives that had a direct impact on local practice. The present study examines how community-based research projects are translated into action.
