From Training to Transfer: Instructional, Occupational, Individual Determinates of Implementation Intentions

Abstract

The successful implementation of evidence-based practices requires that correctional employees have the necessary knowledge and motivation to use skills acquired in training with high levels of fidelity and reach large numbers of offenders. Drawing on best practices in adult education and training and theories of occupational socialization this research analyzing the determinates of probation and parole officers’ intentions to implement evidence-based practices following participation in an advanced training academy. We find that attitudes toward evidence-based practices, self-reported learning, and active teaching practices significantly increased participants’ motivation to transfer training to their workplace. Recommendations for improving training outcomes and implementation of evidence-based correctional practices will be discussed.
