Police Professionalism: Elearning Versus Traditional

Abstract

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, a total of 350 eLearning modules in 15 languages are uploaded in the Global eLearning Platforms/Learning Management System annually and are offered online, offline and through a mobile delivery to a growing number of registered users. Over quarter of a million people visited this Global Learning platform since 2016. Based on this information, it is pretty clear that the future of professionalization of law enforcement organizations is very much tied to an online delivery of various training modules. This paper focuses on the transition of the traditional in-person delivery of Police Leadership training offered by the authors to the members of the New York City Police Department to an on-line delivery of a similar content. The pros and cons of an in person versus on-line education for police officers are analyzed and contrasted against the growing trend of the eLearning delivery.
