Pretrial Detention in Latin America: El Salvador

Abstract

This paper will apply global best practice to pretrial detention to Uruguay and El Salvador. Pretrial detention conditions in these two countries need improvement and pretrial detention is used excessively, contributing to those conditions. We aim to present effective alternatives that will not only reduce pretrial detention but also improve pretrial detention conditions.
