Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind: Exploring Perceived Parental Monitoring and Early Juvenile Delinquency

Abstract

Higher levels of parental monitoring are routinely correlated to lower rates of juvenile delinquency. This project explores the relationship between perceived parental monitoring levels and self-reports of early engagement in juvenile delinquent acts through a series of regression models utilizing the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (Year 9) data. We suggest that higher levels of perceived parental monitoring were only related to significantly lower rates of engagement in early delinquent acts for boys prompting a nuanced discussion for future research of gender, parental monitoring, and juvenile delinquency.
