Crimes In and Around Public Housing: How are they Different From Crimes in Residences in New York City

Abstract

Much research has focused on crimes in and around public housing with accepted knowledge that public housing often experience high crime. However, it is unknown how crimes in and around public housing may differ from crimes in and around ordinary residences. This study will examine crime in New York City in 2016 by three premise types: crimes occurring in (1) Residence-Apartment (N=103,896); (2) Residence –house (N=45,166) and (3) Residence in Public housing (N= 38,191). While 70% of crime recorded by public housing police occurred inside public housing residences, 88% and 72% of crimes occurred inside apartments and houses, respectively. By utilizing crime premise type and location type (outdoor and indoor), this study plans to create crime profiles (residence type (3) x location type (2)) to aid understanding of crime dynamics.
