Exploring the Correlates of a Mental Health Indicator for Inmates in New York City Jails

Abstract

While admissions to New York City correctional facilities have steadily declined from 1995 to 2015, the prevalence of mental health issues among inmates continues to remain high. In 2015, about 17 percent of individuals admitted to the New York City Department of Correction (DOC) were recorded as having a “Brad H” status, a proxy for mental health issues in the corrections data. The present study will examine correlates of “Brad H” status. We will include demographics (i.e., race/ethnicity, sex, age), offense characteristics, criminal history, and self-reported substance use. Results will provide insight into who is receiving this status while detained, as well as highlight possible areas for intervention.
