Using the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) National Incident-Based Reporting System

Abstract

The UCR National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is an incident-based reporting system which collects data on each single crime occurrence. Information on incidents, offenses, victims, and known offenders for 52 specific crimes in 24 major offense categories are included in these data. The NIBRS produces more detailed, accurate, and meaningful statistics because data are collected on when and where crime occurs, what form it takes, and the characteristics of its victims and perpetrators. Additionally, it offers a statistical dataset which provides an analysis of the attributes of crime, the correlation of crimes with other demographic factors, and a source of information on a variety of factors affecting crime rates. The NIBRS enriches the quantity, quality, and timeliness of crime data collection by law enforcement who can use the data to inform, educate, and strengthen our nation’s communities. The information from this paper will provide attendees with a basic understanding of the elements of NIBRS and best practices for using the data for their own uses.
