Examining Experiences of Women in Policing: From Application to Academy

Thu, Nov 16, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marriott, Room 402, 4th Floor

Abstract

Despite attempts to improve recruitment and testing processes, unequal gender representation in police departments persists. The hiring of female officers is likely affected by the attitudes and perceptions of applicants as well as the organizational culture of police agencies. This
research will use surveys and interviews with applicants and recruits in a large urban police department to develop a comprehensive understanding of the experiences of female applicants throughout the police testing and training process.
