Fusing Social Concepts and Homicide Research: Defining Execution Style Homicides

Abstract

This research seeks to define the phrase “execution-style homicide.” Though the term itself has been widely used within the last 50 years in a variety of social spheres, neither social institutions, nor scientific researchers have taken the initiative to create a clear definition of execution-style. A scientifically supported definition will lead to greater understanding of both its consistent and unique behaviors. Based on 60 cases identified from news reports, cases are examined to highlight indicators, consistent patterns, and useful event characteristics needed for future classification. This research reveals a high proportion of execution-style killings are in fact sexually-related.
