Opioid use has risen dramatically in recent years. Some speculate this is due to the increased availability of prescription painkillers. Using a self-report survey, the present study examines the prevalence and progression of opioid use among a metropolitan county jail population. Respondents are also asked about overdoses and other medical problems associated with their opioid use. Correlates of opioid use, including demographics and criminal activity, are also examined. Finally, users are asked to provide suggestions in combating the problem.
