Empirical research highlights the impact of disadvantaged neighborhoods and residential instability on recidivism, rearrest, and treatment failure. Research has also confirmed stable housing reduces recidivism, rates of hospitalization, and time incarcerated. Therefore, which individuals returning to society are at the most risk for residential instability? Using pilot data of 50 individuals recently released from incarceration in San Antonio, Texas, this research examines the trajectory of housing retention after 90 days from release and the characteristics associated with housing (in)stability. Both the association of individual and neighborhood characteristics are examined to understand which individuals are at the greatest risk of residential instability and rearrest. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is used to track the movement of households from time of release, and to identify the socioeconomic conditions of neighborhoods where returning individuals reside. This data is matched to individual characteristics including criminal history, readiness to change, physical and mental health, supportive service utilization, employment, financial status, and family support. Understanding these characteristics helps identify which individuals are in most need of housing assistance at the time of release. Furthermore, the factors associated with residential stability can help guide policy for resource allocation for supportive services.
