Comparison of Spatio-Temporal Measures of Crime Concentration

Fri, Nov 17, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Room 304, 3rd Floor

Abstract

At the 2016 ASC meeting, we compared four measures of geographic crime concentration. In this paper, we show that these indices (Gini, Decile, Simpson, and Shannon) can be also used to measure the temporal concentration of crime. We also show that the h-index (the same index used to measure academic productivity) can be used to measure the concentration of crime at place and time. We calculate these five indices across various geographic and temporal units and then map them to describe the spatio-temporal concentration of crime.
