We are All Green: An Exploration of Racial Differences among Incarcerated Veterans

Sat, Nov 18, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon J, 5th Floor

Abstract

Drawing upon prior research that has examined participation in the military and criminal justice outcomes, the present study explores the influence of service elements on criminal/deviant behaviors across veteran inmates of different racial backgrounds. Specifically, we examine how age of entry, length of service, discharge status, branch affiliation and combat exposure are associated with arrest frequencies, types of criminal behavior, and prison misconduct among U.S. state prisoners. The findings aim to provide better insight into the influence of military service on criminal/deviant behavior for veterans who become involved with the criminal justice system.
