Attitudes Towards Commercial Sex

Sat, Nov 18, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marriott, Room 414, 4th Floor

Abstract

Using survey data from a national sample, this study seeks to explore experience with frequency and attitudes towards commercial sex. While research exists on the experiences of those who work or are victimized within the commercial sex industry, there is a gap in understanding the underlying attitudes towards the willingness to purchase sex in general. This study attempts to fill that gap by measuring attitudes towards commercial sex, attitudes towards prostitutes, and towards johns. Additionally, this study explores attitudes towards others purchasing sex based on proximity or closeness (e.g. sibling v. stranger). Implications for the research and future research will be discussed.
