Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Gendered Analysis

Abstract

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) cover a broad spectrum of events such as sexual, physical and mental abuse, parental incarceration, and parental divorce. In addition to criminogenic risk factors, adverse childhood experiences may cause negative and long-lasting effects on children’s health and welfare. Recently public surveillance of adverse childhood experiences increased, yet little information exists regarding gender differences. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a collaborative project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this study examines gender differences in adverse childhood experiences.
