The Globalization of White Collar Crime Scholarship: A Meta-Analysis of the Literature, 2011-2015

Abstract

While much attention has been paid to the lack of recognition of white collar crime (WCC) studies in the broader discipline of criminology and criminal justice (CCJ), scant research exists that specifically examines the nature of this sub-field. Through content analysis of 16 leading CCJ journals, 2011-2015, we identify and undertake a meta-analysis of white collar crime articles to assess their disciplinary focus, representation in the field, typologies, methods, and authorship. Our preliminary findings demonstrate that while white collar crime scholarship continues to remain underrepresented in the criminological literature overall, a very small number of international journals publish the overwhelming majority of WCC scholarship, by a growing number of international authors. Strongly qualitative methodologically with a typological majority focus on state-corporate crime, we investigate and evaluate the subject matter of these white collar crime articles and its relevance to the discipline of criminology and criminal justice.
