The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate’s program on Countering Violent Extremism has funded researcher to answer specific questions about the measurement, efficacy, impacts and outcomes of coordination and intervention programs in Boston and Los Angeles. Although these projects are ongoing, the first stage of formative evaluations are complete. The intention of this stage of evaluation is to provide a detailed description of the complex, coordinated efforts under study as well as recommendations for variables to measure impact and outcomes for the varied efforts in each of these cities. The findings and implications of the formative evaluations will be discussed as well as the inferences that may be made about future efforts to systematically understand the consequences of these programs.
