• In Event: The Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) Program in the City of Los Angeles 

Abstract

In 2011 the Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) program, a Comprehensive Strategy to gang intervention and prevention, was implemented in the City of Los Angeles. The GRYD Office currently funds approximately 24 community-based agencies that provide intervention and/or prevention services in 23 “GRYD Zones” throughout the City of Los Angeles. Between September 2011 and March 2016, 9,098 youth were referred to GRYD Prevention Services, 42% of which enrolled in, and engaged in, GRYD Prevention Services. Between February 2012 and May 2016, there were 5,351 referrals made to GRYD Intervention Services. Providers were able to follow-up with 91% of these referrals to assess interest in, and eligibility for, GRYD Intervention Services and 87% of the young people identified as being eligible for services enrolled in programming (2,854 of 3,283). In addition, the GRYD Office collaborates with the GRYD Intervention Agencies and law enforcement (i.e., LAPD) to coordinate responses to gang violence in “GRYD Zones” by responding to violent incidents and engaging in pro-active peacemaking. This symposium will discuss the recent evaluation results of the GRYD program, including prevention and intervention services, incident response, and a newly added trauma-informed care component, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives.
