Integrating Trauma-Informed Care with GRYD Gang Intervention Agencies in Los Angeles

Abstract

Gang members are one of the most vulnerable groups for trauma exposure and have been found to have higher rates of PTSD compared to both community populations and non-gang involved juvenile justice populations (Kerig et al., 2016). Due to this recognized need, trauma-informed care is being infused into GRYD gang intervention services. The initial step in doing so included a needs assessment and a pilot trauma-informed care course tailored to the needs of GRYD gang intervention workers. The needs assessment survey indicated that there was currently a minimal use of trauma-informed services at each agency; although, most respondents described their agencies as sincerely invested in becoming trauma informed, and GRYD agency supervisors perceived a high need and indicated a strong investment in obtaining training in the provision of trauma-informed services. The pilot course was subsequently offered and administered through Cal State LA’s extended education program. Evaluation results suggest that overall students that attended the Trauma-Informed GRYD Services Course made positive gains in their understanding, knowledge, and confidence in working with traumatized clients and families. Findings also show that students felt more aware of their own trauma triggers and better equipped with self-care strategies following the course.
