The Effects of Academic Growth on Juvenile Institutional Misconduct

Abstract

The association between juvenile delinquency and education has been thorougly examined. Particularly, it has been well documented that education is related to delinquency. According to Katsiyannis and Ryan (2008) academic outcomes can adversely affect a child’s behavior. Furthermore, illiteracy has been discovered to be the strongest common denominator among adolescents who are involved in corrections (Kidder, 1990). Most studies have examined the relationship between education and deviant behavior of adolescents outside of juvenile institutions. This study fills a gap in the literature by examining the association between education and juvenile institutional misconduct. Specifically, this study examines whether disciplinary infractions decrease in response to increased levels of education or academic growth.
