Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training program in Bridgeport

Thu, Nov 16, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor

Abstract

This study evaluates the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T) program in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The program attempts to persuade kids to avoid gang membership, violence, delinquent behavior and develop positive attitudes about law enforcement. Due to budget cuts many law enforcement agencies in Connecticut that were previously involved with the program are no longer teaching it. The purpose of this study is to explore officers’ view of the program and its impact on schools and the larger community. It also explores the nature of interaction that G.R.E.A.T.-certified officers have with schools in the absence of the program. The data were collected using structured interviews with police officers in the Bridgeport Police Department’s Community Services. The findings reveal that the program has been extremely successful in reducing youth gang activity and building positive partnership between police, schools and community.
