Lessons from the Sandbox: Partnering with Career Specialists to Build Professional Development Curriculum

Abstract

It is common for student affairs professionals and academic affairs professionals to have little to no interaction when it comes to research collaboration and developing course curriculum. The consequence of this is often ill-prepared students entering into the job market missing specific qualities employers are looking for. This doesn't have to be the case. This presentation will provide an example of collaboration between the UMD Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and the Career and Internship Services Center to create a research-based, innovative career development course that teaches students the key competencies they need to be competitive in the criminal justice industry. Pretest and posttest findings will be presented to highlight the success of this course in meeting its objectives.
