Economic-Social Precarity and Violence in Young People in Cape Verde: The Need for a Structural Intervention

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The socioeconomic and political changes observed at the international level have contributed to the increasing of urban risks and insecurity by drawing attention to antisocial behavior, juvenile delinquency and victimization as relevant social problems. Studies carried out in the context of West African countries, including Cape Verde, indicate that juvenile delinquency has been increasing and, above all, it begins earlier and tends to be more violent. However, the knowledge about the factors that are in the genesis and maintenance of such behaviors is still incipient. This study aims at drawing attention to the socio-demographic characteristics and specific needs of young victims of violence in a situation of economic and/or social precariousness and raise the awareness of social institutions that deal with youth issues, in order to attend to and consider the spheres of support, intervention and referral of these situations. In order to carry out this study, we used data from the second phase of the collection of the ISRD-3, using the technique of the online questionnaire survey, in the context of the classroom. In the final considerations, it is necessary to consider the socio-structural dimension in the conceptualization, evaluation and intervention of this type of cases.
