Does Suburbia show the Racial-Spatial Divide?

Abstract

Scholarship has documented the racial spatial divide in urban census tracts (Peterson & Krivo, 2010). Yet, there is much less documentation of the overlap of disadvantage and race in metropolitan suburban areas. This research uses a similar methodology to examine the overlap in the Philadelphia context. Findings show that extreme concentrated disadvantage occurs most often with primarily black census tracts. These findings raise questions about how the overlap of race and disadvantage could fuel violent crime patterns in suburban census tracts.
