Illegal Online Sports Betting and Victimization: The Dynamics of the Offender and Victim Relationship in South Korea

Abstract

The spread of illegal online sports betting in South Korea has served to foster numerous issues including victimization which is problematic and prevalent. Illegal online sports betting organization not only operates their sites but victimizes their clients. However, there are few studies which scrutinize this type of crime even though it is an urgent priority for law enforcement to remedy the issue. The aim of this study is to uncover the dynamics of offender and victim relationship at the portals of online sports betting sites by examining current research on illegal sports betting web sites in South Korea via self-reported survey and big data analytics. The study hypotheses that there is a victim and offender overlap based on online behaviors among illegal online gambling sites. In addition, the sites that are directly visible and exposed to their potential clients via online media outlets are likely to scheme on their clients.
